Freedom Writers

Freedom Writers is a movie and a book that demonstrates many different kinds of freedom, truth, and justice. Mrs. Grunwell is new teacher at a high school were the students have grown up in many different homes and have had struggled through their lives. The book talks about many on the students different struggles that they have gone through in their life. How some are in a gang and cannot get out of it. Because of them being in a gang some of them have been kicked out of their house. Some of the students do not have a safe home and a suitable house to be living in. As you read the book you can see how freedom, truth and justice is played out. The students have a lot of freedom to do whatever they want. They never had to start the journals that Mrs. Grunwell wanted them to write in and they had the freedom to write what they wanted to and allow Mrs. Grunwell to read what they had to say. The students also had a lot of freedom in their life outside of school. Many of them did not do what their parents wanted them to do they would just do what they wanted to do. Some could say that they had the freedom to do what they wanted to do since they had no one to stop them other than the police if they were doing something illegal. Truths is also show throughout the book, the students open up to Mrs. Grunwell and tell her many things about their lives that not many people know about. They tell the truth about their lives and some of the hardships that they have gone through. Some of them talk about how the have witnessed on of their best friends die because of being in a gang. Many of the kids open their lives up to Mrs. Grunwell and tell her the secrets that they have. Freedom Writers also shows justice by Mrs. Grunwell gets justice from everyone who thought that she could not get the students to learn and she did. Mrs. Grunwell showed too many of her coworkers that she could do it, she did not boast to them when the students were learning and having fun learning either. She just let the students learn and her coworkers see what she was doing, she did not try to get justice from them thinking that she could not do it. Freedom justice, and truth are all portrayed in Freedom Writers, this is also great book that ties many of the topics we have learned through this semester.
