Sculptures

“Fall and Winter Vessel” Ben Hammond
1.       Weather, Warmth, Passion, Cold, and Expression
2.       This Sculpture is showing a lady changing from the different season of fall and winter. It shows how she is moving from one season to the other and the clothing that she may have to wear. On the winter side she is all buddle up trying to stay warm and on the fall side she does not have as much clothing on and is just enjoying the weather outside. The shape of the sculpture in on a vase looking thing to show that the seasons always go around then will start and they will end every year they are never ending just like the roundness of the vase. I think that is sculpture is placed by the theater department because it looks out onto an open area of the campus were we can see many of the signs of fall and winter on the ground when the seasons come. This sculpture does express emotion it expresses the emotion of the fall and winter how in the fall you have the winds blowing around everything and in the winter you have to fight the winds and the cold by bundling up and to stay warm. I do not think that this piece would convey anything different if it was placed anywhere else on the campus.
3.       It seems that the artiest wanted to accomplish what he thought about the different seasons fall and winter and he wanted to tell everyone what he thought about it by making this sculpture. I thought that this sculpture was very interesting and made me think about the different season of fall and winter and what they are really like.
4.       I would not display in sculpture in my house just because I am not a big fan of the fall and winter and make me think of the cold and a long two seasons of cold weather to come ahead that I do not like very much.
“Survival” Nathan Pierce
1.       Crazy, Abstract, Tall, Unstable, and Unique
2.       This sculptures shape is very unique it is very tall but also has some other shapes to them such as points of squares on them going up and looking in some of the metal there are circular things in them. The shape does not seem to go with the name of it survival because it is so tall and it does not like it would hold up strong winds and survive outside very well. The texture of the sculptures has many different textures and different because of the different material that was used to make it. This sculpture may be placed by the café since that we need food to survive. I could not tell if any light hit the sculpture because it was very cloudy out when I went to look at the sculpture. This sculpture may not give off the same message if it was in a different location away from the café. It is placed in a good place and I don’t think I could be placed any other way it would not get the same meaning as it does by the café. This sculpture may express the idea that at sometimes it can be really hard to survive and we have different things we need to hold on to and connect to use to help us get to the top and survive. I think this because without help sometimes there is no way that you can survive on your own and exceed in everything that you would with the help of others.
3.       It seems that the artist was trying to accomplish saying that survival may be hard and sometimes surviving in different parts of life are harder to survive then others and we need the help of other material or other people to survive. I think that is sculpture is very interesting and makes me think but also get a little confused with what he is really trying to say.
4.       I might think about displaying this sculpture in my yard I wish it had a different name though so that the sculpture would make more sense of have someone explains the real meaning before I would put it in my back yard.
“Katrina” Osamede Obazee
1.       Disaster, tragedy, ruins, starting over, and heartbreak
2.       This sculpture relates to the disaster that happened in New Orleans with the hurricane Katrina. The shape describes that of how a person on the roads may have felt and had to go through by their umbrella going backwards and feeling like they are going to fall over because the winds are so strong and pushing them over. The texture also describes the reactions that people may have had and shows the entire thing that the wind was blowing away from the people on the sidewalks. This may in be placed by the library in the open area because it is kind of at and end of a hill and when the water runs off it tends to run off in that general directions and the winds can be very strong in that open area of campus just like it was when the hurricane hit, but we do not have that strong of winds. This sculpture does express a lot of emotion on what the people in New Orleans and many other places that Katrina hit it expresses worry since the person does not know what is about to come and also expresses disaster of what happened after the hurricane hit. I think this because by looking at the art work the women’s face she looks very worried and scared about what is coming. I do not think that is Sculpture would be conveyed any other way if it was placed in a different area.
3.       It seems that the artist was trying to accomplish how many people felt when Katrina was about to hit and everything that they were going through and their fight to survive. I like this sculpture because it shows how many people were feeling during that time and makes you think about how different it really could have been and we do not even know.
4.       I would think about displaying this in my backyard to show and be a reminder and God is in control and even when bad things happen he is still there to help us get through the situations.

Freedom Of Speech Painting

Freedom of Speech
1.      The styles of the people in the painting imply their socioeconomic class by the people that are listening to the speaker are all dressed in business suits and look like they are very successful business workers. The speaker is not dressed very nice he looks like he is a working man he is wearing a blue shirt which that symbolizes that of a working man. The jacket that he is wearing also looks very warn and dirty to show that he may not have a lot of money to have nice clothes or that he is a hardworking man.
2.      The details of that of the paper in the man pocket and the man that is holding it open may show that the man that is speaking has already looked over the annual report of the town and knows what is going on in the town and is now talking about what is has to say. The man on the foreground may be looking at it to see if what the speaker is talking about really applies to what the report is on. He could also be looking at the report to fallow along with what the speaker is talking about.
3.      The exaggerated size of the speakers’ ears may represent that the speaker is listening. He is listening to what they audience may have to say and is also listening to what freedom may really be.
4.      Rockwell’s paintings do not lack depth and emotional complexity of serious art. He shows a lot of emotion is the painting Freedom of Speech. He shows the emotion on the peoples’ faces in the audience. He also paints the paper so that we are in the painting as well hearing what the speaker has to say. With us being in the painting as well we involve our emotions to everyone else’s.  The audiences face can show how what they are thinking and what they are thinking he shows their expression very well. The painting Freedom of Speech is a work of art it is a picture that was taken in real life Rockwell just decided to paint the picture that was taken. It really happened but things that have really happened and are captured are still considered art.

The Fitness of Human Nature

The Fitness of Human Nature

1.        What does Wilson mean by the term "kin selection?" What evolutionary factors have lead people to feel altruistic toward members of their own family?
When Wilson is talking about kin selection he is talking about the extended group of people we hang out with. The people we pick to be around is up to us and we usually pick people that have the same interest in us and have things in common with us. We will share things in common with the person and because of this we will want to be around them.

2.       What are the basic differences in mating strategies between males and females? How are these differences, according to Wilson, led to certain differences between male and female human nature?
The basic differences between men and women in mating strategies is that women know that they cannot reproduce their how life so they will start the mating process as soon as they can so they will be able to reproduce. Men have the physical possibility to reproduce their whole life. When men become fathers they are more physical capacity to inseminate another woman almost immediately. Men look for sex more and make sure that their mate will be able to put up with it where as women look for more of the emotional and make sure that your personalities are right for each other. This has led to certain differences between men and women human natures by men are more physical were as women are more emotional and care about personalities.

3.     Why according to Wilson, are human tribal and territorial? Are these traits that can be altered, or does Wilson present them as inherent parts of our psychological make-up?
According to Wilson humans are tribal and territorial because that want to defend private resources for themselves and their social group pass more genes on to the next generation. Wilson says that these traits will be inherent parts of our psychological make-up because he says that we pass these traits onto our generations. If this is all we know we will teach it you they and it will be passed down to them not only in their traits but also by watching other people actions

4.       What does Wilson say lies behind the human desire to cooperate and make agreements with other human beings? Why do we act altruistically toward people who are not closely related to us and do not therefor carry any of our genes?
What lies behind human desire to cooperate and make agreements with others is that humans have their own pride and do not want to have to set aside their need for that of others they want what they want and tend not to make agreements with the person. We do act altruistically toward people that we do not know because we feel like it does not matter what they have to think and if we hurt them it will not matter to us because they are not close friends will us. This does not carry any of our genes because for each person this could be different some people care more about what people have to say and think about them. Whereas other people do not care what you think about them, so they will say and do anything not worrying about what anyone thinks.

The Emperot"s Club

The Emperor’s Club
1.       Mr. Hundert’s quote can be seen as true by looking at his student Sedgewick he cheated in grade school and once he grew up he did not change was still cheating. He proved Mr. Hundert’s quote by saying that stupid does last forever and because when he grew up he did not grow out of his stupidity.
2.       Mr. Hundert was so shaken by Sedgewick because Sedgewick’s father was rich and when he went to go and visit him his father ask Mr. Hundert what he wanted him to do because he did not know. Mr. Hundert felt limited to what he could do with Sedgewick so he became shaken and just made him seem better then he really was in the class. Mr. Hundert became altered by this experience by it haunted him through his life and did not forgive himself for what he did with Sedgewick.
3.       Sedgewick influenced the other boys in the class and Mr. Hundert said his influence as “hypnotic” he led the other boys astray and in the beginning when he was disrupted he made the other boys disrupted as well and did not listen to Mr. Hundert. The other boys wanted to be like Sedgewick so they acted like he did and did the things he did.
4.        The dilemma that Mr. Hundert faces is that Sedgewick did not make the finials he was the fourth person and they only take the top three. Mr. Hundert changed some of the grading on his paper so that he was able to be in the contest. With Sedgewick being in the contest that meant that another person would not get to that deserved to be in it.
5.       During the contest Mr. Hundert notices that Sedgewick is cheating and does not really know the material on his own. When he sees that he is cheating Mr. Hundert tells the leader of the school that he is cheating but he tells him not to worry about it and go on with the contest. Mr. Hundert decides to take a question that he would not know the answer for and was on the plaque above the door and he does not know what it is. At the end of the contest Mr. Hundert goes up to him and confronts him about it and Sedgwick tells Mr. Hundert that he was not surprised that he knew and was surprised he didn’t do anything about it sooner.
6.       Mr. Hundert wanted to participate in the contest again hoping that Sedgwick would have changed his ways and was not a cheater. Mr. Hundert also wanted to confront the person that should have been in the contest and tell him that he should have been in the contest and that he cheated him. He hopes that he can tell the students what he did and they can forgive him for what he did back when they were younger. His hope is hope his squashed by he sees that Sedgewick did not change and he cheated again on the contest again, but he was rewarded because the kid that should have been in the contest forgave him for not having him in the contest and did not think it was that big of deal.
7.       The films does resolve the tension of what Sedgewick said because after he says it Sedgewick’s son comes out of the bathroom stall and hearing everything that he had just said. Sedgewick will now have to confront his son by what he was saying and make sure that he son does not live that way and make sure that he does not think that his father has lied his whole life and cheated his whole way through life.
8.       Mr. Hundert returns to teaching because he realizes that what he did back in Sedgewick’s class has forgiven him and that he does not have to have it hanging over his head. He also misses the kids and putting the good in their life and wanting to be a good influence on them and he was a lot of student’s favorite teacher. The surprises that he gets when he gets back to teaching is Martens son comes into his class and Marten forgives Mr. Hundert and wants him to show his good to his son and give him another chance I some kind of way.
9.       Mr. Hundert uses visual aid and makes contest for the kids that they can enter into if they do good on an assignment they can get into it and everyone can see how good they are doing in school
10.   Mr. Hundert is not only teaches the students what they need to know for school he also teaches them the things that they need to know to grow in life and to make it in the real world and so they can succeed later in life and use the things that they have learned and apply them to the real world.

Teacher Impact on Me

A person, who has impacted my education and a part of a reason why I want to be a teacher, is my second grade teacher Mrs. Eekoff. Mrs. Eekoff made learning and school fun for me, also with every assignment we had to do it would be fun as well. We would play a lot of games a remember every week for spelling we would play a game and not liking spelling so much it made me learn in a fun way and not realize I was learning. If you were having trouble with something she would sit down with you and help you out till you got it. She wanted to make sure everyone was learning and not falling behind. Also if you were not doing well on something she would not put you down but instead make sure to keep you excited about learning. Mrs. Eekoff also had a relationship with the kids she was easy to talk to and if I stayed after school with my mom I would go talk to her and hang out in her room with a group of kids. She made me want to be a teacher by seeing how she put the joy of learning in first and second graders. She also made me want to teach by how she shared a relationship with the students and had a lot of kids look up to her and ask her questions all through their schooling years.
